Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remains a major global health challenge. In this study, researchers assessed the Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF) rat as a model for studying vascular changes in human DKD, while also evaluating the effects of hydronephrosis, a known condition in this strain. Using μCT imaging and vascular casting, the study revealed that ZDF rats exhibit significantly reduced cortical and total renal vascular density compared to lean controls—confirming their relevance for modeling DKD-related vascular changes.
