On-going PhD projects

Currently two PhD projects are running in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics group; one develops computational fluid dynamics models of the left ventricle and the second develops fluid-structure interaction models of the left atrium. Both PhD projects will result in a deeper understanding of the flow patterns and tissue motion in the left side of the heart and how this changes when cardiac disease progresses. Furthermore, these models will serve as validation for development of advanced imaging technologies for quantification of flow properties such as pressure gradients and flow complexity.

Rasmus Hvid: "Modelling of cardiac biomechanics"

The main objective of my project is to build a modeling pipeline for estimating intra-cardiac flow patterns from 4D (3D+time) images of the human heart. The pipeline is intended for patient-specific data and is based on geometry prescribed computational fluid dynamics. The pipeline is validated by phantom studies and state-of-the-art ultrasound techniques.

 

Masoud Meskin: "3D Fluid-Structure Interaction modelling of cardiac biomechanics"

In my PhD project I work on the design of a Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) model of the left atrium including the mitral valve. The plan is to validate the numerical model with a flow mock circulatory loop of the left side of the heart, composed of a hyper-elastic 3D printed chamber mimicking the left atrium and mechanical prosthetic mitral valve.
