Project Description:
In this project, the dynamics of the Left Atrium (LA) and the Mitral Valve (MV) will be investigated by combining Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) method and advanced medical imaging. The aim of the study is to construct a realistic holistic model of the LA, including the MV based on healthy and pathologic patient-specific cases to predict the changes in the cardiac mechanics and hemodynamics, resulting from disease or any therapeutic interventions.

Perspective:
The end goal of this project is to 1) build and develop a FSI model of the LA and the MV based on the in-vivo data and 2) to design an Automatic Patient-Specific Diagnostic Tool, based on a holistic model of the LH, and study some clinical cases with different cardiac pathologies. To achieve the first goal, a finite element based solid geometry of the LA and the MV, using CT images segmentation, will be built. The second task is to combine the solid mechanics model with the fluid dynamics of the LA to develop the FSI model including the MV dynamics.
