Become a Test Participant
Many people know how difficult it can be to communicate when you have a hearing impairment, especially in noisy environments. We want to understand why this is the case and therefore need your help. In connection with the research project 'Fundamental and applied research in people with and without hearing difficulties,' we are looking for test participants both with and without hearing impairment for a series of listening experiments.

If you are interested in being a test participant, please fill in the form below. First, we will invite you to an informational interview, conduct a hearing test, and register you in our database. We will then contact you when we have a listening experiment that requires participants with your hearing profile. The purpose of the project is to investigate how the hearing of normal-hearing and hearing-impaired individuals differ, with a particular emphasis on informing the development of new hearing aid technologies. The project takes place primarily at the Hearing Systems Section, DTU Health Tech, Technical University of Denmark in Kgs. Lyngby, but there may also be some listening experiments at the audiological departments at Bispebjerg Hospital and Rigshospitalet.
Participants will undergo a hearing test to assess their suitability for participation in the project. During the listening experiments, different sounds such as tones, noise, and speech are presented. Participants’ ability to hear and distinguish between the sounds will be measured. People with tinnitus are also very welcome.
How does it work?
A single appointment typically lasts 1-2 hours and, depending on the project, there may be 1-10 appointments. Before you agree to participate in a listening experiment, you will be informed of how much time you need to allocate and which measurements you will participate in. You can always opt out if you decide not to participate in a listening test or if you no longer wish to be registered in our database.
What do you get out of it?
We cannot assist with individual diagnoses or fitting and use of hearing aids, but we can provide general information about hearing and hearing loss. Additionally, you can get a copy of your hearing test. Participation in our experiments is compensated on an hourly basis according to applicable rules, at about 130 DKK per hour. The project will run over several years, and new participants can sign up at any time.

Test Experiments with CI
We are also looking for test participants with one or two cochlear implants (CI).
All experiments will be conducted by experienced researchers using approved clinical and research equipment. There will be no changes to your sound processors, and the experiments will not affect your regular treatments.
I DTU’s laboratorier er der en række lydbokse, hvor testpersoner kan sidde i hver sin lydtætte boks, mens de forskellige researchere følger med på skærme udenfor. Bente Fjorbak har netop deltaget i cirka en times testforsøg hos en af de tyske gæsteforskere. Men sproget er ingen hindring, for der er tolk med til at oversætte fra tysk til dansk.
”Det gør ikke ondt,” siger Bente med et stort smil.
”Der går jo ikke noget fra én fordi man er med i forsøgene.”
Bente begyndte at være testperson i sommeren 2014 på Bispebjerg Hospitals audiologiske afdeling, og herefter var hun med i nogle testforsøg på DTU. Bente er tunghør.
”Det var omkring år 2000 at jeg fik det første høreapparat. Men det ligger i familien. Min farfar blev tunghør, og min far fik høreapparat allerede da han var sidst i halvtresserne.”
Bente viser sine i-øret apparater, og der er ingen andre end Bente selv, der kan bruge dem, for de er ’skræddersyede’ til netop hendes ører.
Hvad går de her tests ud på - skal du sidde der i mange timer?
”Nej det er et par timer det drejer sig om. Nogle af de foregående test handlede om, hvordan hovedet fungerer i det hele taget, når man ser noget tekst. Man skal svare på nogle spørgsmål og huske ordene. Testen i dag går kun på kun hørelsen. Man skal blandt andet høre små sætninger med baggrundsstøj. Det er sætninger, der er mening i og det er på rigsdansk og ikke noget volapyk,” forklarer Bente med et smil.
Sætningerne varierer i lydstyrke, og der kommer efterhånden mere baggrundsstøj på. Så gælder det om at gentage de sætninger, man synes man hører.
Hvad får du selv ud af det?
”Jeg får det ud af det, at jeg har været med til at hjælpe forskningen. Det høreproblem, jeg selv har, kan jo nok ikke nå at ændres i min levetid. Men til gengæld kan det hjælpe andre fremover. På hospitalet har jeg også været til andre undersøgelser, hvor man bliver spurgt om det er i orden, at der også er en praktikant tilstede. Det er det bestemt. De skal lære det. Og det er sådan, at jeg jo som pensionist har tiden til det. Jeg skal ikke tage fri fra arbejde,” slutter Bente. Hun er færdig for i dag, og skal med bus 300 S til Buddinge, hvor manden har lovet at lave frokost.
”Han er nemlig god til at lave mad, og så kan han tilmed rydde op,” siger Bente med glimt i øjet.
