Peter E. Andersen receives prestigious ERC Synergy Grant for research in early detection of cancer

The European Research Council awards 684 million euros to address some of the most complex scientific problems.

Together with three other principal investigators, Peter E. Andersen, DTU Health Tech, receives 10 million euros for the research project ’Zee-Zoom-Zap: a new paradigm for cancer theranostics’.

One of the main challenges in detecting cancer early is being able to take precise images of cells located deep within the tissue. Together with his research partners, Peter E. Andersen proposes overcoming the limitation with their so-called Zee-Zoom-Zap concept. The Zee-Zoom-Zap concept will serve as a one-stop-shop by combining early detection of cancer through small lumens (‘zee’), non-invasive “biopsies” (‘zoom’), and local therapy (‘zap’).

The research project is a collaboration between Peter E. Andersen (DTU), Andreas Kjær (University of Copenhagen), Çağlar Ataman (Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg), and Miguel Ángel González Ballester (Pompeu Fabra University).

THE EUROPEAN RESEARCH COUNCIL (ERC)

The European Research Council (ERC) supports absolute world-class research. The grants are awarded to excellent researchers at different career stages and are to be used to build a team around an original and groundbreaking research idea. The ERC has existed since 2007, and in the period 2021-2022, 10 DTU researchers received DKK 161 million in ERC grants.

ERC Synergy Grants are awarded to 2-4 researchers who, using their complementary scientific skills, will solve ambitious scientific problems that cannot be solved individually. Up to 10 million euros is awarded over 6 years as a starting point.
