Project Description:
The objective of the project is to perform Two-Photon Excited Fluorescence, Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (TPEF-SPIM) through a fibre of sufficient length for endoscopic applications, without moving parts, including beam shaping and scanning at the distal end of a fibre achieved by a spatial light modulator (SLM) at the proximal end, being stable towards fibre bending, and dispersion management concurrently realised using a separate fibre, also being stable towards fibre bending.

Perspective:
In point-of-care diagnostics, two-photon imaging offer great promise to address unmet clinical needs due to its ability to capture biomedical information noninvasively and in real-time, in contrast to current diagnostic procedures, where time-consuming invasive excisional biopsy and histopathology are the golden standards. Therefore, two-photon imaging enables reduced therapy costs, improved clinical outcomes, and a better patient experience. T-SPIF provides a crucial step towards implementation of TPEF-SPIM into endoscopes, a necessity for clinical adaptation. This enables further research and development beyond the project towards in vivo tests of this technology as well as combinations with other imaging modalities into a multimodal system.
