Project Description: 
The objective of this project is to explore the next generation of microcarriers for engineered delivery of drugs and probiotics. We use polymeric microcontainers for controlled delivery of active compounds, by loading them into the reservoir of the device and sealing them with a polymeric coating. The coating is designed and developed from biopolymers, based on the desired release profile for specific active and bioactive compounds, so that they are delivered in a controlled release and site-specific manner.  

Perspective:
The main outcome of this project is to show that by engineering the drug microcarrier, the compound can be delivered in a more effective and efficient way. Therefore, the perspective is that approaches explored in this project, such as microdevices for drug delivery as well as developed biopolymeric coatings for drug delivery can be translated to commercial products and open new windows for medical treatments through engineering approaches.
