Project Description: 
Contrast enhanced super resolution ultrasound imaging is a state-of-the-art ultrasound technique that tracks microbubble contrast agents in the blood stream in order to obtain high resolution images of our interior organs. The project will combine this technique with capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) row-colum addressed arrays, which can make 3D images without an excessive number of connectors. The first aim of the PhD is to optimize this technique by investigating the microbubble’s response to insonification by a CMUT probe. Secondly, we intend to develop a beamformer algorithms for a lensed row-column array, which will increase the field-of-view of the 3D images. This will hopefully enable volumetric view of all the tiny capillaries in our organs.

Previously, characterization of blood flow in micrometer-sized vessels has been beyond the resolution and sensitivity of commercial ultrasound technology. Utilizing contrast enhanced super resolution ultrasound imaging together with a row-column array will enable full 3D visualization of the capillary anatomy, flow and perfusion of blood. In the future, this technique will hopefully aid diagnosis and treatment of cancer, diabetes and vascular diseases at the capillary level.
