To celebrate the IEEE UFFC Test of Time Award, we are highlighting the influential two-part paper published by Prof. Jørgen Arendt Jensen and Prof. Erik Vilain Thomsen 10 years ago.
In Part I, the authors introduced a beamforming approach with integrated apodization to address a key challenge in Row-Column Arrays: ghost echoes caused by edge waves. By implementing a roll-off apodization region, they achieved a 43 dB reduction in ghost echoes while preserving the main lobe. This innovation improved vessel imaging accuracy and laid the groundwork for efficient, high-resolution 3D ultrasound imaging.
This pioneering work has had a lasting impact on the field, establishing Row-Column Arrays as a practical and powerful alternative to fully populated 2D arrays.
