Are you interested in audiology and want to join an international research project on hearing loss? Then we may be looking for you.

The Hearing Systems Section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) seeks a qualified candidate for a Research Assistant position within the international research project UHEAL: ‘Uncovering Hidden Hearing Loss’. Within the project, you will be involved in conducting studies of inner ear damages and their consequences in the auditory brain. A main task will be to collect neural (EEG) and behavioural audiological data to measure auditory function in the ear and the brain of human patients. Depending on the candidate, the position also offers an opportunity to work with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning of patients to understand how hearing loss affects the structure and function of the auditory system. The research assistant position is for 1 year.

The UHEAL project that you will be part of is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between DTU Hearing Systems, the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (DRCMR, Hvidovre Hospital, DK), and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Institute (MEEI, Harvard Medical School, USA). In this research project, we focus on understanding noise-induced damages to the synapses of the inner ear that are difficult to measure in standard clinical diagnosis, also known as ‘hidden hearing loss’. To understand hidden hearing loss we combine cellular physiology, MR brain imaging, as well as electrophysiology and clinical audiology.

About us
You will become part of the Hearing Systems section at DTUs department of Health Technology. The Hearing Systems Section is a world-leading unit within hearing and speech research. Our research is concerned with auditory signal processing and perception, speech communication, audiology, behavioural and objective measures of auditory function, auditory neuroscience, environmental acoustics, and hearing-instrument signal processing. The goal of our research is to understand the functioning of the human auditory system and to provide insights that are useful for technical applications, such as hearing diagnostics, hearing aids, and cochlear implants.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will have the opportunity to work with an international and cross-disciplinary research team. Within the UHEAL project, your main task will be to conduct data collection that includes EEG and clinical audiological measurements conducted at DTU with both younger and older patients. You must be able to speak Danish to be able to interact with Danish-speaking patients, and experience in interacting with audiological patients is a plus. Depending on qualifications and interests, you may also contribute to functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging conducted at Hvidovre Hospital.

We are looking for candidates that:

  • Are interested in joining an international cross-disciplinary research project
  • Have experience in audiology or within another hearing-related field
  • Speak Danish and English
  • Can interact with both older and young human patients
  • Have good collaboration skills
  • Have experience with EEG
  • Experience with programming and/or data analysis is also a plus

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1 year.
