Project Title: Assembly and characterization of red blood cell substitutes
Group: Biomimetrics, Biocarriers and Bioimplants, Biomaterial Microsystems
Supervisors: Leticia Hosta-Rigau and Stephan Sylvest Keller

Project Description:
The main object of the project is to fabricate haemoglobin loaded microcarriers that physically mimic Red Blood Cells (RBCs), using top down fabrication techniques like soft lithography. The use of these techniques provide precise control over shape, size and flexibility of the fabricated microcarrier, thus resulting in a microcarrier that not only resembles a RBC in its biological and chemical characteristics but also its physical characteristics.

Perspective:
Donor blood is vital resource to compensate for blood loss experienced during accidents, acute disasters and surgeries, etc. Donor Blood transfusion is considered a safe process, yet there is a great demand for red blood cell substitutes. This is due to the large number of challenges associated with the collection, storage and transfusion of donor blood. These include the short shelf life, storage conditions, need for typing and matching along with limited availability among others.
