Project Description: Natural evolution has developed complex processes and materials with exquisite specificity, selectivity, and adaptivity. Unveiling the underlying mechanisms and applying similar strategies we can design surfaces with novel properties to address key problems in the modern society. These superior functionalities can be mimicked using nanofabrication. Advanced, bioinspired materials with a light-actuated switching of their wetting properties are the focus of this study.

Perspective: Manipulating the liquid-surface interaction embraces applications spanning further than energy harvesting, sensing technology, anti-icing, anti-fouling, drag-reduction, and microreactors. The incorporation of a photo-sensitive component in these applications is a lever for easy in-situ switching of their properties. Light has fast switchability, pattern variability, and travels through empty space. This enables quasi-instantaneous, high-throughput readings even in semi-closed experimental setups making it particularly suitable for biological cell studies.
